It’s now May 1st and we are at sea appearing to be at a stand-still. The distance between Aruba and Santa Marta, Columbia is not enough to justify the usual 17 knots we often use so the ship is in a following sea at just over 10 knots. Since we are traveling the same path as the swells it’s almost a dead calm inside the ship; no rocking at all and the ship appears to be standing still in the water.

On the 27th of April we had a relatively short stay in Florida before moving on. It was hectic however as a large number of people who started their world cruise in Fort Lauderdale got off and were replaced by people cruising the short segment between Florida and Los Angeles. Lots of luggage changed places in the hallways. So, lots to potentially trip over. Plus, some of the new folks are new to cruising or new to this ship and so that adds to the confusion.

One day out from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) we’re sailing along and the day being beautiful I was out on the balcony soaking up some sun; just watching the bow wake. I’ve been seeing flying fish again so can confirm that they inhabit the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. They may be in other waters we’ve passed through but I did not see them or have the opportunity to go out due to weather or our being in port.

At sea the day after a beautiful day in Bermuda I woke before my alarm to diffused light. The sky was grey with no way to determine the sun’s direction. The horizon was fuzzy and indistinct. The sea was rolling with whitecaps and the ship was rocking a bit side to side.

Well, we’ve now crossed most of the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. The crossing was a mixture of weather. As noted before, we had a number of days of rough weather and seas. Shortly after posting that note the sun came out and the sea turned to glass with hardly a ripple. The next day the wind came back and so did some of the swells; not as bad as before but still noticeable and you had to keep a handrail handy when walking on the ship. From there the weather slowly turned better and the temperature became moderate; in the 60sF. One day started with rain and ended with a clear sky and sun. In short, a very mixed bag on the Atlantic crossing.

We are in day three of a seven day rush to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Spain to the Bahamas and all of those days so far we have been rocking and rolling along. While we missed the storm itself, the result of the storm, long rolling swells, have crossed our path for three days now and according to the Captain will probably not die down much until tomorrow morning some time. We’re dealing with four meter or larger swells (12 feet or more).
