A quick 96 mile overnight sail took us from Oahu to Kauai and Nawiliwili Harbor. It was interesting to see the ship get into the harbor (and, later out) using the thrusters. The harbor entrance has a ninety-degree turn after entry and then another ninety-degree turn past the second breakwater. There was a tug standing by to help if needed but it only had to watch.

Land Ho! 🙂 So far this trip we have sailed 17,384 nautical miles and should be close to 20,000 when the trip ends next Sunday.
We arrived right on time and docked at Pier 2 in Honolulu; the same pier used during the world cruise earlier this year. This time I took an excursion that went to the North Shore.

By the magic twist of a dial when we went to bed last night we were 19 hours ahead of Los Angeles time and when we got up this morning we were five hours behind; the twist being the stem on my watch. We crossed the International Date Line in an eastbound direction and picked up the day we lost crossing between Alaska and Japan earlier in the trip.

We made landfall today (11/4) right on time at 9am. U.S. Customs came aboard in force to process everyone back into U.S. territory. Weather was in the 80s with, of course, high humidity; I had to watch the camera lens each time I went outside as if the camera got too cold in the air conditioning the lens would fog up. Keeping the lens cap on until the camera warmed a bit was helpful.

We won the race with the typhoon to Manila by letting it win. It moved more northwest and sped up so it only brushed Manila while we slowed down and stayed south until the last minute when we pushed pedal to the metal and headed straight north into Manila and made it on time today at 7am.

Our last stop in Viet Nam* was the old Saigon: Ho Chi Minh City, renamed after the war. It was again a hot and humid day. Fortunately, the air conditioning in the bus worked well but the afternoon was bad because of the long stops for shopping built into the schedule.
